Starting a business can be one of the most terrifying, exciting, life-altering things you can do. It can also be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. There is no greater success than turning what you love into a full-time career. Starting Citrine Grey has been a journey and I wanted to share some tricks that I have learned along the way.
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
Before you start anything, have an honest conversation with yourself. Having an idea is only a small part of starting a business. Before you jump all in you should sit down and truly get to know yourself. Are you fully passionate about this idea? Are you willing to push yourself out of your comfort zone to make this company succeed? How much money can you realistically put into the company at this time? Being realistic will help you create a business plan that works for your life and ultimately help you become more successful.
It is also important to figure out why you’re starting a business in the first place. Running a small business takes a lot of time, hard work, and sacrifice. Are you filling a need that you see in the market place? Are you truly passionate about this business? I started Citrine Grey because I saw a need in the Woman’s Professional wear market. At my cooperate job I am almost always the youngest person and more times than not the only woman. I wanted clothing that would make me feel confident and I wasn’t finding that in traditional retailers.
Knowing why I’ve started my company has also helped me to figure out my brand. Citrine Grey was built by a woman with the goal of empowering woman everywhere to dress and ask for what they want out of life. Our company’s motto is “It’s not about what you wear, but how you feel that matters.” Knowing why I started Citrine Grey from the beginning has helped me stay consistent when branding, creating content, advertising which is necessary for successful branding.
Lastly, plan to succeed. This may seem simple, but it can actually be one of the hardest aspects of starting a business. The road to starting your own company can be daunting and it might seem overwhelming at times. Success doesn’t happen on the first try or with the first plan. Be open to learning, changing, and growing as you are on this journey. Don’t give up the first time something doesn’t go the way you expect it to because life never does. Believe in yourself, believe in your business, and plan for success no matter how many times you have to adapt. Remember, at the end of the day you are doing what makes you happy and that is all worth it.
